Chiyoda, Toshiba starts operation of bio-energy plant with large scale carbon capture

The Mikawa Power Plant is fueled with palm kernel shells (PKS) as its primary fuel source for biomass energy generation

Chiyoda Corp. has completed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) operations contracted with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation in 2016 for a large-scale carbon capture facility at the 50,000-kW Mikawa Power Plant to be operated by a subsidiary of Toshiba ESS, SIGMA POWER Ariake Corporation, in Omuta, Fukuoka prefecture.
 
The Mikawa Power Plant is fueled with palm kernel shells (PKS) as its primary fuel source for biomass energy generation. Therefore, the new facility to commence operation will be the world’s first bioenergy power plant to be equipped with large-scale Carbon Capture and Storage capabilities.
 
This facility uses Chiyoda’s unique fuelgas desulfurization technology (CT-121) as a pretreatment device for the separation and recovery of CO2. It will capture more than 500 tons of CO2 a day, over 50% of daily emissions from Mikawa Power Plant, making it the Japan’s first carbon-capture unit to capture over 50% of total CO2 emissions from a thermal power plant.
 
In addition, this facility represents a technology that can be introduced not only to new installations, but also to existing thermal power plants.
