MECS catalysts help convert sulfur dioxide into sulfur trioxide efficiently and economically

  • By ICN Bureau | November 27, 2025
Elessent Clean Technologies has announced an immediate global price increase of $2.50 per liter for its cesium-promoted MECS sulfuric acid catalysts, citing current market conditions.

Additional charges may apply for freight, near-term delivery, and specialty product grades. The change will take effect immediately, subject to contract terms.

MECS catalysts, a cornerstone of the sulfuric acid industry since 1925, help convert sulfur dioxide (SO₂) into sulfur trioxide (SO₃) efficiently and economically. Elessent, a global leader in sulfuric acid process technology, says its products not only boost plant capacity and efficiency but also help reduce SO₂ emissions.

The company’s MECS technologies are widely used across phosphate fertilizer, non-ferrous metals, oil refining, and general chemical industries. Innovations such as MECS heat recovery systems (HRS), SolvR regenerative SO₂ scrubbing, and MAX3 sulfuric acid production technology have “revolutionized” plant performance and cost-effectiveness, according to Elessent.

Their portfolio also includes catalysts, Brink mist eliminators, DynaWave scrubbers, ZeCor corrosion-resistant alloys, and acid coolers designed for demanding industrial environments.

With over 1,000 sulfuric acid plant licenses worldwide, Elessent Clean Technologies emphasizes long-term customer support and sustainability, driving efficiency and carbon reduction across the metal, fertilizer, chemical, and oil refining industries.
