One person was killed and six others sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out at an Indirect Bath Heater (IDBH) during maintenance work at Oil India Limited’s Intermediate Tank Farm (ITF) in Tengakhat, near Duliajan in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, on Friday morning.

The fire erupted at around 9.05 am in the indirect bath heater area, which had been under isolation since November 4 for maintenance activities, Oil India Limited (OIL) said in a press statement.

Seven personnel employed by the operation and maintenance (O&M) contractor were caught in the incident. While six injured workers were rescued and rushed for medical attention, one person succumbed to injuries at the site.

Of the six injured, five were shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, while another was admitted to OIL Hospital in Duliajan. Medical treatment is being provided to all the injured personnel.

A massive firefighting operation was launched immediately, with the installation’s fixed firefighting system activated and OIL’s fire services department mobilising fire tenders and dry chemical powder (DCP) tenders.

The blaze was finally extinguished at 12.30 pm, nearly three hours after it broke out. A total of 11 fire tenders were deployed to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, OIL has constituted an internal inquiry committee to establish the immediate and underlying causes of the incident, assess the damage and recommend preventive measures to avert similar incidents in the future.

Expressing grief over the fatality, the company said, "OIL express its deepest condolence to the bereaved family."
