The World Bank's economic growth forecast for South Asia released in April 2025 predicts India's real GDP growth rate for fiscal 2025 to be 6.3 percent, and stable growth is expected to continue in the future. India, the world's largest market with a population of over 1.4 billion people, is also increasing its presence in the international community as a leader in the Global South, and is attracting attention as a destination for global companies, including Japanese companies.
In particular, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, where Origins Chennai Industrial Park is located, is attracting attention as a manufacturing and export base due to its close proximity to an international port and good access to Southeast Asia. In recent years, in addition to the entry of auto parts and air conditioning manufacturers, investment in the semiconductor and electronic equipment sectors has also expanded, and Chennai is attracting attention.
Since starting operations in 2019, MIPC has been selling and operating the first phase plots of Origins Chennai Industrial Park, and currently has 16 manufacturing companies, including six Japanese companies. Origins Chennai Industrial Park is located about 37 kilometers north of Chennai city center, along National Highway 16, and can be reached in about an hour from the city center and the international port. Tamil Nadu is one of India's leading manufacturing bases, with a diverse range of industries concentrated in the area. There are many people in the region with experience working in the manufacturing industry, and there are also many science and engineering universities, making it easy to secure a diverse range of human resources, including technical personnel.
In addition to these advantages in terms of location and human resources, Sumitomo Corporation is leveraging its experience in developing and operating industrial parks in 10 locations in six Asian countries to provide an environment in which tenant companies can operate smoothly. These location conditions and services have been evaluated, and many companies are currently inquiring, and development of the second phase of the pilot plots is currently underway.
