Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU) and Shimadzu Analytical (India) have recently launched the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Analytical and Measurement Sciences at Somaiya Institute for Research and Consultancy (SIRAC).

The inaugural function was attended by Samir Somaiya, Chancellor, SVU; Prof V. N. Rajashekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, SVU; Yoshiyuki Fujino, Managing Director, Shimadzu Analytical (India); Manabu Sakamoto, General Manager, International Operations Department, Shimadzu Corporation; Nakul Toshniwal, Chairman & Managing Director, Toshvin Analytical; delegates from Toshvin and Shimadzu (India); and members of SIRAC team.

The new analytical and measurement lab facility represents a significant step to provide advanced analytical services and capabilities to researchers and valued industry clients, thereby fostering partnerships within the scientific community. The centre boasts of sophisticated instruments such as Gas Chromatography (GC), GC-MSXMS, FTIR, DSC, and DTG UV-Visible spectrophotometer.

The Shimadzu - Somaiya Vidyavihar Center of Excellence in Analytical and Measurement Sciences in the Somaiya Vidyavihar University Campus is a Central Advanced Analytical Instrumentation Facility. It will be used for academic enrichment and development of students and industry and applied research and new method development.

The CoE will collaborate on a sustainable learning space that supports the implementation of advanced instrumentation facility in the field of analytical chemistry in the premises of SVU; Develop and conduct training programs on advanced analytical instrumentation to meet the up-to-date needs of analytical researchers and chemists from industry and academia; and Jointly develop and organize training programs/certificate courses for Pre-employment Training (PET), Continuing Education & Training (CET) for students and industry partners, local internships, and specific academic modules to enrich student’s knowledge in advanced analytical techniques, laboratory informatics and scientific data management.

The CoE will jointly work on applied research & development work relating to the following emerging areas: New & sustainable materials; Green energy; Bio-fuels; Environmental protection; and Bio-Catalysis & Electro catalysis.

The CoE will work on Publication of Research Data: Publish and present application/research data/research papers on the research work carried out in recognized National and International scientific forum; Utilize the research publication for the mutual benefit of the industry and  SVU laboratory instruments and technologies - Based on the objectives of the laboratory it is equipped with Shimadzu analytical instruments/technologies covering mass spectrometry, molecular spectroscopy, elemental spectroscopy and material characterization applications.

The CoE has installed following equipments: Triple Quadrupole GCMS System TQ-8050NX NC with Headspace Sampler HS-20NX (Trap); Gas Chromatograph, Brevis GC with FID, TCD with Auto Sampler; UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, UV-1900i; ICPMS Spectrometer ICPMS 2030; FTIR Spectrophotometer, IRSpirit-T with Diamond ATR; Differential Scanning Calorimeter DSC-60Plus; and ThermoGravimetric Analyzer DTG-60.
