Synthomer has been awarded two major grants through Ohio’s Greater Akron Polymer Innovation Hub, marking a significant step in advancing polymer research and sustainable materials development.

The company received one direct research and development grant and one indirect grant administered by the Polymer Industry Cluster, organizations that help transform bold concepts into commercial innovations.

The Polymer Industry Cluster plans to invest $8 million (£6 million) across key projects in the Ohio region over the next four years. These grants are the first in a series, with additional rounds expected in mid-2026 and early 2027.

PLASTVANCE received a direct grant to accelerate adoption by supporting new applications and validating key technical performance. Meanwhile, the indirect grant backs Synthomer’s collaboration with the University of Akron, focusing on converting carbon dioxide (CO₂) into high-value polymers like butadiene—broadening the portfolio of sustainable materials available to the industry.

In addition, Synthomer is connected to two other projects selected in this funding round, led by its value chain partners BioVerde and Promerus, aimed at developing next-generation sustainable materials.

Bonnie Yu, Marketing Director Adhesive Solutions - Plastics, said: “Our collaboration with the University of Akron demonstrates how partnerships can accelerate innovation across the polymer industry. By working together, we can develop more recyclable packaging solutions while strengthening Ohio’s innovation ecosystem and supporting long-term, sustainable growth.”

Raymond Somich, Global Director of Government Affairs, added: “Being associated with four of the seven projects selected in this funding round underscores our leadership in collaborative innovation and our commitment to sustainability across the value chain, reflecting the shared effort needed to deliver transformative, real‑world solutions."
