Thirumalai Chemicals reports Q2 net loss of Rs. 34 crore despite 35% revenue surge

Consolidated revenue from operations jumped 34.8% year-over-year to Rs. 596.47 crore

Specialty chemical manufacturer Thirumalai Chemicals Limited announced its consolidated financial results for the second quarter ended September 30, 2026, revealing a persistent bottom-line deficit despite substantial top-line growth.

According to the regulatory filing, Thirumalai Chemicals recorded a consolidated net loss of Rs. 34.31 crore for Q2 FY27. This marks a marginal widening from the net loss of Rs. 33.38 crore reported during the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.

The net loss persisted despite a robust expansion in business volumes. Consolidated revenue from operations jumped 34.8% year-over-year to Rs. 596.47 crore, up from Rs. 445.37 crore in Q2 FY26. On a sequential basis, the performance marked a reversal from the preceding first quarter of FY27, where the company had temporarily bounced back into profitability with a net profit of Rs. 14.21 crore on revenues of Rs. 330.65 crore. Operational metrics showed some signs of resilience, as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) swung to a positive Rs. 38.7 crore for the quarter, though elevated financing costs and asset allocations heavily impacted ultimate net margins.

A significant factor influencing the group's current financial profile is its aggressive capital investment strategy. The company disclosed a large net current liability position of Rs. 772.69 crore as of September 30, 2026. Management attributed these capital pressures primarily to ongoing capital expenditure incurred by its US subsidiary, TCL Specialties LLC, which is building a greenfield manufacturing facility in the United States to serve global chemical supply chains. To support these operations, the US unit is actively seeking debt financing between $130 million and $180 million, targeting a closing by the end of November 2026.

To alleviate cash constraints and fund its expansions, Thirumalai Chemicals engaged in strategic asset monetization during the half-year period. The company realized Rs. 96.73 crore from a partial stake sale in Ultramarine and Pigments Limited, alongside an additional Rs. 10.38 crore from the disposal of non-core land and windmills.
