Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has appointed Deepak Gupta as Director on its Board and elected him as Chairman, effective 1 March 2026, strengthening the company’s leadership with one of India’s most experienced energy sector executives.

Gupta currently serves as Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL (India) Limited, bringing more than 35 years of experience across the oil and gas value chain. A mechanical engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, he is widely regarded for combining technical expertise with strategic and board-level leadership.

Since joining GAIL as Director (Projects) in February 2022, Gupta has led a series of major infrastructure and clean-energy initiatives. His portfolio includes natural gas and LPG pipeline expansion, gas processing units, critical SCADA infrastructure and green energy projects aimed at advancing India’s Net-Zero ambitions.

He also oversees operations and maintenance of GAIL’s vast network of more than 20,000 kilometres of natural gas and LPG pipelines, compressor stations and processing plants.

Under his leadership, the Dabhol Breakwater Project executed by Konkan LNG Limited—a subsidiary of GAIL—was completed successfully, enabling all-weather operations at the terminal. Gupta has also driven digital transformation programmes to improve operational efficiency and transparency across the business.

Over the course of his career, Gupta has held several prominent leadership roles. He has served as Chairman of Talcher Fertilizers Limited and as Director of ONGC Petro‑additions Limited and South‑East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited. He also previously chaired Green Gas Limited and Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited, contributing to strategic planning, governance and stakeholder alignment.

Before joining GAIL’s leadership, Gupta spent a long tenure at Engineers India Limited, where he played a key role in executing major global and domestic energy projects. These included the massive Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, HMEL’s petrochemical complex in Bathinda and GAIL’s petrochemical expansion at Pata. He also contributed to Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project, helping strengthen India’s global energy engagement.

A recognised thought leader, Gupta has authored multiple technical papers on project execution and digital transformation, with many of his ideas on project acceleration and digitisation adopted as institutional best practices.

Alongside his new role at Mahanagar Gas Limited, Gupta also serves on the boards of Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited, GAIL Gas Limited and Petronet LNG Limited.
