The European Commission has imposed steep anti-dumping measures on choline chloride imports from China, with duties ranging from 90% to 115.9%.
The move follows a 14-month investigation that uncovered unfair trade practices, prompting EU regulators to act.
“Imposing these duties will help to re-establish fair competitive conditions on the EU market between choline chloride imported from China and the domestically produced product,” the Commission said. The EU market for the chemical is valued at €84 million.
Choline chloride is a versatile chemical used primarily as a feed additive for animals including chickens, pigs, rabbits, and horses. It also appears in baby formula, prenatal dietary supplements, and other nutraceuticals, as well as serving as a clay stabiliser in drilling fluids for the oil and gas sector.
The EU-based choline chloride industry employs roughly 160-175 people across Belgium, Italy, and Spain.
