ARLANXEO and Covestro cut rubber emissions with renewable chlorine

The move is already reshaping ARLANXEO’s Baypren portfolio

ARLANXEO and Covestro have stepped up their collaboration to cut emissions in synthetic rubber production, rolling out ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine to significantly lower the environmental footprint of chloroprene rubber.

The move, anchored in renewable-energy-based chlorine supplied by Covestro, is already reshaping ARLANXEO’s Baypren portfolio. The companies say the shift delivers an average ~20% reduction in global warming potential compared to 2025 levels, depending on grade.

From January 2026, ARLANXEO’s entire chloroprene rubber production has been switched to ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine—marking a major milestone in its push to decarbonize its value chain and offer lower-impact materials to downstream industries.

Covestro’s certified chlorine is produced using electricity from renewable sources, reducing lifecycle emissions in a key input material for rubber manufacturing. The change feeds directly into applications across automotive, construction, industrial products, and adhesives, where carbon reduction pressure is intensifying.

ARLANXEO says the shift also improves transparency by enabling product-level environmental footprint data across its full CR portfolio.

“Integrating ISCC PLUS-certified materials into our production is a key step in reducing the environmental footprint of our CR products,” said Niels van der Aar, Head of Sustainability at ARLANXEO.

“It underlines our commitment to supporting customers with more sustainable material solutions while advancing transparency along the value chain by supplying corresponding product environmental footprint data for ARLANXEO’s entire CR product portfolio.”

Covestro, a key upstream supplier in the transition, says the collaboration demonstrates how certified feedstocks can scale real emissions cuts in downstream industries.

“At Covestro, we support our customers in reducing emissions along the value chain by supplying more sustainable basic chemical raw materials from our multiple ISCC PLUS-certified production sites,” said Moritz Winterstein, Head of Trading Cluster Basic Chemicals EMEA at Covestro.

“Our collaboration with ARLANXEO demonstrates how certified raw materials and renewable electricity can contribute to lowering the product environmental footprint of downstream applications and support customers in achieving their sustainability targets.”

ARLANXEO is also expanding its “Eco” Baypren® grades, combining ISCC PLUS-certified chlorine with certified butadiene to drive further reductions in carbon impact while maintaining performance standards.

The companies say the partnership strengthens supply chains for lower-carbon elastomers at a time when industries from mobility to construction are under mounting pressure to decarbonize—without compromising material performance.
