HS Hyosung Advanced Materials secures ISCC Plus certification

The company is driving plant-based carbon fiber innovation from recycled resources

  • By ICN Bureau | September 12, 2025

HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, a global leader in carbon fiber technologies, has been awarded ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification PLUS), a global standard for sustainable materials and supply chain transparency. This achievement underscores the company’s commitment to advancing environmentally responsible production methods and marks a major step toward the commercialization of bio-based carbon fiber.

The ISCC PLUS certification provides independent verification of sustainability across the entire lifecycle of materials, from raw material sourcing to production and distribution. By incorporating both plant-based inputs and recycled raw materials, HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has established a validated framework that ensures full traceability and adherence to rigorous global standards. Widely recognized by international manufacturers and institutions, ISCC PLUS is considered a key benchmark for evaluating ESG performance in supply chains.

The company’s certified bio-acrylonitrile (bio-AN) carbon fiber production process demonstrates significant commercial potential, as it closely aligns with established chemical manufacturing methods. Independent testing has confirmed that carbon fibers made from bio-acrylonitrile deliver mechanical performance equivalent to conventional carbon fibers. Crucially, the acrylonitrile precursor is derived from bio-naphtha, produced using renewable and recycled feedstocks such as rapeseed oil and waste cooking oil, reducing carbon emissions across the value chain.

“Securing ISCC PLUS certification marks an important milestone toward building a fully sustainable production platform,” said Jin Dal Lim, CEO of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials. “We are committed to advancing the next generation of low-carbon, bio-based materials and strengthening our leadership in sustainable solutions for the global market.”
