The collaboration combines P2 Science's proprietary PIOz process, which converts oils from algae into key chemical intermediates, with Algenesis' Bio-Iso innovation and polyurethane platforms
P2 Science, a leader in green chemistry, and Algenesis Corporation, a pioneer in biodegradable polyurethanes, have formed a strategic partnership to develop and commercialize 100% bio-based, biodegradable polyurethanes derived from algae feedstocks.
The partnership aims to aims to provide sustainable material solutions for various products without relying on petrochemical content or toxic phosgene.
The collaboration combines P2 Science's proprietary PIOz process, which converts oils from algae into key chemical intermediates, with Algenesis' Bio-Iso innovation and polyurethane platforms.
The companies are establishing a new supply chain for these materials. P2 Science is producing algae-based azelaic acid, a key ingredient, at its Connecticut facility to supply Algenesis.
The resulting 100% bio-polyurethanes are designed to deliver high performance while being safely biodegradable at the end of their life, addressing the issue of microplastic pollution.
“This collaboration accelerates our shared vision: to eliminate petroleum-based carbon from everyday materials,” said Oihana Elizalde, CEO of P2 Science. “By pairing our intensified ozonolysis platform with Algenesis’ polyurethane expertise, we can offer brands a measurable sustainability advantage without compromising performance.”
Steve Mayfield, CEO of Algenesis, emphasized the environmental impact: “Our mission is to replace traditional plastics with plant-based materials that safely degrade at the end of life. Working with P2 allows us to incorporate a new class of biobased intermediates into our formulations, delivering superior performance while promoting a cleaner, healthier planet.”
