SIBUR and Sunsource Minerals launch innovative eco-friendly solution to combat oil spills

The new solution leverages a synthetic copolymer paired with a plant-based modified surfactant, stabilized in an aqueous medium

SIBUR PolyLab, in collaboration with Sunsource Minerals, has unveiled a cutting-edge solution designed to clean coastlines and mitigate the effects of oil spills. This innovative approach combines advanced polymer science with sustainable chemistry to offer a highly effective and eco-friendly response to environmental disasters.

The new solution leverages a synthetic copolymer paired with a plant-based modified surfactant, stabilized in an aqueous medium. This composition rapidly breaks down oil films and accelerates contaminant removal—without the need for organic solvents. Complementing this formula, polypropylene sorption materials in the kit efficiently collect the displaced oil, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Notably, the product maintains high efficiency even in extreme conditions, including Arctic temperatures, and is fully biodegradable in both sea and freshwater. It is non-toxic to aquatic life and designed with a low ecological footprint, making it safe for widespread use. Beyond coastline cleanup, the emulsion is applicable for cleaning tankers, oil and gas equipment, and various industrial sectors such as energy, transport, and utilities.

This initiative reflects SIBUR’s strategic commitment to sustainable, high-tech environmental solutions, reinforced through collaboration with the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University on polymer-based disaster mitigation research.

"Our partnership with Sunsource Minerals demonstrates the power of combining applied science with industrial expertise. This solution shows that polymeric materials can perform effectively in challenging conditions, helping minimize damage from oil spills and reduce ecological impact," said Vasily Mashukov, Director of Applied Development at SIBUR PolyLab.

Mikhail Chernov, CEO of Sunsource Minerals, added: "By combining our knowledge in inorganic chemistry with SIBUR's polymer expertise, we’ve created a shoreline cleaning solution that works in even the harshest environments. We believe this product will be a critical tool for rapid response to oil spills, supporting both environmental and industrial initiatives."

With this development, SIBUR and Sunsource Minerals are setting a new benchmark in eco-innovative disaster response, offering industries and communities a reliable, sustainable, and technologically advanced solution to one of the most persistent environmental challenges.
