The winning projects were judged on the basis of their novelty value, usability, learning, customer orientation, and effectiveness
Tata Chemicals bagged the award in circular economy and carbon neutrality innovations category at the 15th edition of Quality Innovations Awards 2021.
With India’s first time participation amongst 17 other countries and a total of 561 innovations, Tata chemicals is the only Indian company to win at this international event. A total of 25 best innovation awards over various categories were awarded. The winning projects were judged on the basis of their novelty value, usability, learning, customer orientation, and effectiveness.
Tata Chemicals’ prize-winning application titled “Wealth from Waste: Dead Batteries to Pigments - Cobalt aluminate” focused on converting hazardous metal extracted from waste Li-ion batteries into a value-added chemistry that also reduces the impact of mining and ecological damage. The innovation saw the successful synthesis of cobalt aluminate pigment using recovered cobalt and the aluminium used as raw material was sourced from recyclable alternatives such as used Li-ion batteries.
The Total Solar Reflectance (TSR) values of these pigments are comparable to those made with virgin raw materials.
"At Tata Chemicals, we ensure that a continuous high quality innovation pipeline fuels growth for new & existing business. We are ecstatic that our application has been recognised on such a prestigious worldwide stage. This award will only serve to strengthen our commitment towards sustainable practices," said Dr. Richard Lobo, Head-Innovation and CQH (Business Excellence), Tata Chemicals Ltd.
Tata Chemicals will continue to focus on science-led innovations, digitisation and sustainability as key pillars for their mission of serving society through science.
