WEVO targets EV battery safety push with high-performance silicone seal for thermal runaway protection

WEVO is targeting that critical weak point with its liquid silicone rubber solution WEVOSIL 23130

  • By ICN Bureau | May 30, 2026
China’s tightening EV battery safety rules are pushing materials innovation into high gear, and German specialty chemicals company WEVO-CHEMIE is positioning itself directly in the spotlight.

With the new GB 38031-2025 standard set to raise the bar for high-voltage battery safety from July 2026, manufacturers must ensure battery systems can better protect passengers and emergency responders during thermal runaway events.

At the center of this challenge: the integrity of the battery housing seal.

WEVO is targeting that critical weak point with its liquid silicone rubber solution WEVOSIL 23130, designed for formed-in-place gasket (FIPG) sealing systems used in EV battery packs.

The stakes are high. When a battery enters thermal runaway, it can rapidly release extreme heat, pressure, and corrosive gases. Any failure in sealing can escalate the danger. WEVO argues its LSR formulation creates a robust barrier that keeps housings airtight under these extreme conditions, helping contain gas and smoke while maintaining structural integrity.

The company highlights the material’s strong adhesion—exceeding 2 MPa—along with resistance to mechanical stress, heat, and chemically aggressive battery gases. Just as critical, the seal is designed to avoid forming harmful decomposition byproducts even under extreme load.

Manufacturing demands are just as important as performance. The filler-free silicone is engineered for precision dispensing in automated production lines, including complex 3D battery housing geometries.

It combines long open time—over 24 hours at room temperature—with fast curing capability when heated. Using infrared activation at up to 140°C, initial curing can be achieved in under five minutes, enabling both speed and flexibility in large-scale EV production.

Beyond sealing, WEVO’s broader RTV-2 silicone portfolio spans potting compounds, structural adhesives, gap fillers, and protective gels—each aimed at improving thermal management, mechanical stability, and safety in high-voltage battery systems.

As global EV safety regulations tighten, materials like WEVO’s LSR are becoming a frontline technology in the race to make battery packs safer, more durable, and production-ready at scale.
