GreenH powers India’s first hydrogen train with 1 MW green electrolyser

GreenH Electrolysis has powered a landmark moment in India’s clean energy transition by designing and delivering the hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure for the country’s first hydrogen-powered train.
 
The project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at Jind on July 17, marks a major step towards decarbonising India’s transport sector and advancing the nation’s green hydrogen ambitions.
 
GreenH’s 1 MW PEM electrolyser, manufactured at its facility in Jhajjar, Haryana, is at the heart of the hydrogen production system. Using advanced technology from its parent company H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies, the electrolyser can produce 420 kg of green hydrogen per day, supporting reliable round-the-clock operations for the pioneering railway project.

GreenH Electrolysis, a joint venture between H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies, a leading green hydrogen technology company, and North India-based Castlegreen Energy Private Limited, developed the complete hydrogen production and refuelling station for India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train.
 
The hydrogen-powered train project involved retrofitting a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake operating on the Sonipat-Jind section from diesel to hydrogen power. 
 
Indian Railways awarded the retrofit contract to Medha Servo Drives Limited, which subsequently contracted GreenH to execute the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of the hydrogen production and refuelling station.
 
Delivered as a fully integrated turnkey solution, the facility includes process engineering, electrical systems, instrumentation and controls, and advanced safety systems designed to ensure seamless hydrogen train operations.
 
The station also features India’s largest railway hydrogen storage and refuelling infrastructure, with 3,000 kg of hydrogen storage capacity, hydrogen compressors, and hydrogen dispensers equipped with pre-cooler integration for safe, efficient, and rapid refuelling.
 
The project highlights the role of indigenous technology and innovation in accelerating India’s green hydrogen ecosystem and supports the vision of Viksit Bharat by enabling cleaner mobility solutions.
