Braskem recently launched the world's first polyethylene (PE) wax from a renewable source, intended for the production of adhesives, cosmetics, paints and compounds used in the transformation of thermoplastic resins. The product, commonly used as a viscosity modifying agent in several formulations, has the same properties and performance as the version made with PE of fossil origin. Produced from sugarcane ethanol, the new solution offers a smaller CO 2 footprint, is recyclable and has a multimarket application.
With the arrival of PE wax from a renewable source on the world market, Braskem innovates and expands the I'm green bio-based portfolio with products that go beyond existing resins supplied to date. The I'm green brand represents the company's commitment to the circular economy and is comprised of renewable and recycled source solutions.
"For more than a decade, Braskem has been producing plastic of renewable origin. Since then, Braskem has been looking for ways to support its customers in the search for new products to reduce their carbon footprint. After PE and EVA I'm green bio-based, we now bring PE wax from a renewable source to the global adhesives, cosmetics, paints and compounds market, which reinforces our commitment to becoming a carbon neutral company by 2050", explains Gustavo Sergi, director of Renewable Chemicals and Braskem Specialties.
The I'm green bio-based polyethylene used in the manufacture of renewable PE wax is capable of absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during its production cycle. In addition, the manufacture of renewable polyethylene from ethanol generates energy savings of around 80% compared to traditional routes. "We work daily with the objective of uniting innovation and sustainable development to generate a better impact on the planet and society, and this launch is one more result of our effort to decarbonize the value chain in which we operate", concludes Gustavo.
