PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) and One Biosys Sdn Bhd for the supply of plastic waste from landfills and evaluation of potential collaboration to build waste segregation facilities in Malaysia.

Under the MoU, KDEBWM and One Biosys will supply plastics waste that consists of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) as well and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to PCG for the production of circular products for food packaging, healthcare, household and industrial applications. The MoU also covers a joint feasibility study to evaluate the commercial viability of building waste segregation facilities in Malaysia which will ensure effective plastic waste segregation.

Signing the MoU on behalf of PCG was Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Ir. Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, while KDEBWM was represented by its Managing Director, Haji Ramli Mohd Tahir and One Biosys by its Executive Director, Dr. Muhammad Yani.

Commenting on the partnership, Ir. Mohd Yusri said, “We look forward to our partnership with KDEBWM and One Biosys. The transition to a circular economy requires new solutions to address the gaps in the plastic value chain – from better waste management to improving the economic viability of recycling solutions. This partnership is our next step towards realising our aspiration to be a solutions partner in addressing plastics pollution in Malaysia following our partnership with Plastic Energy Ltd in 2019 to establish a facility to convert contaminated, low quality, mixed plastic waste into pyrolysis oil. With this MOU, we are able to accelerate our initiatives towards circular economy in ensuring sustainable consumption and production of plastics.”

Managing Director of KDEBWM, Haji Ramli Mohd Tahir said, “KDEBWM is always open to partnerships or collaboration that will contribute sustainably to the economy and the environment. We are proud to collaborate with PCG, which is a subsidiary of PETRONAS for an initiative that we hope will be a significant milestone for the circular economy here in Malaysia,”

KDEBWM is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) entrusted to manage domestic waste collection, public cleansing and bulky waste at Industrial, Commercial and Institutions as well as cleaning of public parks serving 12 municipalities within Selangor, Malaysia.

Meanwhile, One Biosys, a Malaysia-based company specialising in eco-environment with specific focus on material recovery and engineering, through microbiology and nano-technology systems, ecosystem engineering products and services. This technology enables the separation of almost all kinds of heterogenous mixed organics residues and effluents, from fresh and legacy waste in landfill, agricultural wastes, leachate and biosolids, into valuable products such as organic minerals suitable for agricultural uses and dry mixed recyclables.

"One Biosys is very pleased to be chosen to partner with PCG in its effort to make our world a better place, focusing on creating a healthier environment to achieve our collective goal of Greening The Future. We hope that this partnership will spur other industry collaborations in total municipal waste management through innovative and sustainable solutions,” said Dr. Muhammad Yani in closing.
