Tokuyama Corporation announced that it has received Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and Green Gold Label (GGL) certifications on February 7, 2022 and February 17, 2022, respectively, with respect to its efforts to ensure the sustainable procurement of palm kernel shell (PKS), a biomass fuel used in the Group's private power plants, from such perspectives as natural forest conservation and biodiversity.
In order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Tokuyama is promoting the use of biomass as a fuel for its private power plants. Among the various types of biomass fuels, PKS is positioned as a key source of energy. Against this backdrop, the Company recognizes the critical need to ensure traceability, the degree of environmental friendliness exhibited by the place of production, and legality of PKS procured from overseas, from production, processing, and transportation. Based on this understanding, Tokuyama has taken all appropriate steps to obtain certifications by global third-party organization.
Consistent with the third-party certifications provided by RSB and GGL, which are recognized under the revised Business Plan Development Guidelines for Biomass Power Generation (April 2021) issued by Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, a wide range of stringent standards are in place that set limits on the amount GHG emissions allowed at the time of biomass production. Tokuyama will continue its efforts to reduce total CO2 emissions through the use of properly certified biomass fuels, and to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.
