Perpetual Next has signed a License and Engineering Agreement with Air Liquide Engineering and Technologies to deploy syngas-to-methanol technology at its first biomethanol facility, laying the groundwork for the wider rollout of its industrial-scale production model.
The agreement covers Air Liquide’s Rectisol and Lurgi Methanol technologies, with an option to extend their deployment across additional biomethanol sites. The move marks a significant step in the industrialization of Perpetual Next’s Biomethanol Blueprint, a standardized concept designed to accelerate the development and replication of large-scale production facilities.
The technologies are designed to process synthesis gas (syngas) from a range of sources, including biomass, and have been deployed in industrial plants worldwide.
Perpetual Next’s Biomethanol Blueprint combines torrefaction, gasification, syngas cleaning and upgrading, and methanol synthesis to convert low-grade organic waste, including waste wood, into biomethanol.
By integrating established industrial technologies into a repeatable model, the company aims to reduce project development complexity, streamline execution and capture economies of scale as it expands its production portfolio.
The first application of the Blueprint is planned for Delfzijl in the Netherlands, where the facility is designed to produce 220,000 tonnes of biomethanol annually.
Perpetual Next plans to replicate the model across a broader international pipeline, including proposed projects in Moerdijk, Poland and Estonia, as well as other locations worldwide.
The agreement brings together Perpetual Next’s standardized project concept and feedstock strategy with Air Liquide’s established technology and engineering capabilities, creating a framework for deploying the technologies across multiple industrial-scale facilities.
Rolf Bosma, Managing Director of Perpetual Next, said: “This suite of agreements marks an important milestone in the industrialization of our Biomethanol Blueprint. Delfzijl will be the first application of the concept, providing the foundation for subsequent projects in Moerdijk, Poland, Estonia and other sites worldwide. By establishing a framework with Air Liquide for multiple biomethanol sites, we are creating a scalable technology platform that supports the roll-out of our biomethanol portfolio.”
The expansion strategy comes as Perpetual Next targets growing demand for renewable carbon-based methanol in the chemical industry and maritime sector. Through the replication of its standardized Blueprint, the company aims to build significant production capacity while creating a repeatable model for future biomethanol developments.
