ep Group teams up with GridBeyond to supercharge UK battery storage with AI

The partnership involves the optimisation of 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in North Baddesley, UK and the enrolment in the capacity market

UK-based energy transition investor ep Group has struck a new partnership with global smart energy specialist GridBeyond to roll out an AI-driven optimisation programme across its fast-growing battery storage portfolio.

The deal strengthens ep Group’s recently launched joint venture with Norwegian power-systems and battery-storage firm Pixii AS, created to meet surging demand for high-performance distributed energy systems across the UK.

At the centre of the new collaboration is the optimisation of a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in North Baddesley, which will also be enrolled in the UK’s capacity market.

GridBeyond’s Energy Management System will provide real-time optimisation, forecasting and trading, opening the door to new revenue streams and enabling more strategic charging and discharging based on shifting market conditions — a move expected to boost profitability while extending battery life.

“Our partnership with GridBeyond advances our mission to accelerate the shift to distributed, decarbonised, and digitised energy systems,” said Leo Bedford, Partner at ep Group. “We’re combining GridBeyond’s optimisation capabilities with Pixii’s power-conversion technology and our own delivery expertise to help clients turn energy infrastructure into a strategic, value-generating asset.”

GridBeyond said the tie-up marks another step in scaling up the UK’s energy-storage backbone. “This partnership demonstrates our commitment to advancing energy storage in the UK,” said Scott Berrie, Director of Origination at GridBeyond. “Our AI-driven optimisation, market-leading forecasting and asset health insights are designed to maximise profits across all markets. Energy storage is essential to unlocking the full potential of renewable power.”

GridBeyond aims to accelerate a global shift to zero-carbon energy by harnessing AI to optimise distributed assets — from utility-scale renewables and battery storage to industrial demand — and dispatch flexibility into markets at the most valuable moment. The company says this approach helps asset owners boost revenues, cut costs and reduce exposure to price volatility while supporting the UK’s transition to Net Zero.
