Subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation have agreed to transfer their lithium-ion battery electrolyte manufacturing assets in the United States and the United Kingdom to Luxembourg-based Green E Origin SARL (GEO).
This marks a strategic shift in the company’s Western operations. Definitive agreements for the transactions have been signed.
The deal covers manufacturing businesses operated by Mitsubishi Chemical America in Memphis, Tennessee, and Mitsubishi Chemical UK Ltd. in Billingham, England. Both facilities produce lithium-ion battery electrolytes, a core material used in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Mitsubishi Chemical said the move reflects a broader effort to upgrade its business model in Europe and North America while positioning the company for mid- to long-term market growth. The company plans to pivot toward strategic collaboration and a strengthened manufacturing and sales network, rather than directly operating production sites in those regions.
The group’s lithium-ion battery electrolyte technology is built on proprietary additives designed to suppress electrode side reactions, enabling high power output, durability, and enhanced safety. These features have driven widespread adoption in automotive applications, with the technology also licensed to battery manufacturers.
Mitsubishi Chemical will retain manufacturing operations in Japan and China and continue supporting xEV customers globally.
