The first edition of ‘NextGen Chemicals & Petrochemicals Summit 2021’ to be held from 7-8 October 2021 has a deeply researched, highly relevant agenda that is focused on post-pandemic challenges, global and India trends to help India move in the big league. 

The two day long virtual summit cum exhibition being organized by Indian Chemical News will host thought leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders across chemicals, petrochemicals, energy, pharmaceuticals and other allied sectors. The main theme of the Summit is 'Moving in the Big League'.

Themed as ‘Policy changes to make Indian chemical industry globally attractive,’ the inaugural session of the event on October 7, 2021 is focused on topics such as need for a comprehensive policy, PLI scheme and its benefits, strengthening infrastructure, bridging imports and exports gap, and developing chemical clusters. 

The first session of the day is a panel discussion titled, ‘Digitalization and Industry 4.0: Accelerating its pace’ and has the topics including digitalization opportunities in chemical and petrochemical sectors, demand of big data and analytics to revolutionize smart manufacturing. It will also discuss the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in enhancing capabilities in smart manufacturing, and increased use of digital twins and IoT among other key points. 

The second session is a technical one and focused on Indian CMSR. The topics include overview of CMSR and timeline for implementation. It will also throw light on required information for substance notification and registration, overlaps and scope issues of the CMSR with other regulations in India, timeline and fee apart from compliance strategies. 

The third session is themed, ‘Petrochemicals: Driving sustainable growth’. The key discussion points include petrochemical growth opportunities in 2021, technology trends in the petrochemical sector, impact of draft PCPIR in the petrochemical sector, and sustainable growth in the petrochemical sector. 

The fourth session of day one is focused on Research and Development and accordingly themed as, ‘Leveraging R&D for achieving higher growth’. The key discussion points include increasing investment in R&D, new areas for leveraging R&D investment, leveraging R&D infrastructure in Universities and Labs, creation of R&D funds by the government, developing an institutional framework for R&D and enhancing chemical patents from India. 

The second day of the summit on October 8, 2021 will begin with the unfolding of the fifth session titled, ‘Specialty Chemicals: Expanding its horizons’. As the name suggests, the topics will be focused on leveraging India’s cost advantage by investing in production for exports and meeting local requirements with the specialty chemical sector. It will cover topics such as setting up high growth opportunities, investing in the developing Indian market, developing a special business model, and preparing for mergers and acquisitions. 

The sixth session of the event will be themed ‘Sustainability: Earlier the better’. The topics include achieving sustainability through digital transformation, leveraging sustainable technology, waste management and recycling, energy and water conservation, and climate change mitigation.

‘Strengthening correlation between chemical and pharmaceutical’ will be the theme of the seventh session, with topics ranging from growing linkages between pharmaceutical and chemical to building a conducive policy environment for growth, sourcing raw materials, creating value chain, and need for a robust supply chain and logistics. 

The discussion during eighth session will focus on ‘Agrochemicals: Doubling India’s exports/farmers’ income’ and it will feature topics such as likely impact of Pesticides Management Bill 2020, taking advantage of China +1 strategy for agrochemicals, and safeguards that need to be in place when we attract large MNCs. This session will also discuss whether the government should introduce the PLI scheme to reduce import dependence and explore expanding basic research and intellectual property protection. 

The focus of the ninth session will be on leadership and is appropriately titled as ‘NextGen Leaders: Agents of Change for Achieving Future Growth’. The discussion points include vision for future expansion and sustainable growth, increasing exports market share, creating leadership pool to drive future growth, working in multi-disciplinary groups, leading physical and virtual teams, staying ahead of customers’ fast changing needs, and preparing for disruptive change.  

The tenth and final session of the day is titled, ‘Hydrogen the next clean energy.’ The topics include developing a hydrogen economy ecosystem, cost comparison with other ecosystems providing government grants for R&D, pilots and upskilling, development related to electrolyzers, storage and renewable energy, storage, safety and environmental concerns.
