Oil India Limited’s green-energy arm is set to process 5,000 tonnes of municipal waste every day across Haryana under four new integrated waste-to-clean-energy projects that will produce Compressed Biogas (CBG) and green electricity.
OIL Green Energy Limited (OGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Oil India Limited (OIL), has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the municipal authorities of Gurugram, Faridabad, Hisar and Ambala to develop integrated CBG and Waste-to-Energy projects across the four clusters.
The MoUs were signed in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, along with senior ministers, Members of Parliament and senior officials from the Haryana government and OIL/OGEL.
The four projects will be developed at different scales: 500 tonnes per day (TPD) in Hisar, 900 TPD in Ambala, 1,600 TPD in Faridabad and 2,000 TPD in Gurugram.
Together, the facilities are expected to process 5,000 TPD of municipal solid waste, producing an estimated 70–75 TPD of CBG and 50 MW of green power.
The projects will use an integrated processing model designed to extract maximum value from municipal waste before it reaches landfill.
Waste will first undergo scientific pre-processing and segregation. Recyclable materials will be recovered, while the wet and biodegradable fraction will be converted into CBG. Only the non-recyclable dry fraction will be sent to Waste-to-Energy facilities for electricity generation.
The model is aimed at maximising resource recovery while improving energy recovery from waste that cannot be recycled or converted into biogas.
By diverting waste from landfills and converting different waste streams into CBG and green electricity, the projects are expected to strengthen Haryana’s push towards more scientific and sustainable municipal waste management.
The initiative also supports the national goals of Waste-to-Wealth, a circular economy and the clean-energy transition.
The projects are aligned with the Government of India’s GOBARdhan – National Circular Bioenergy Scheme 2026, which seeks to promote scientific waste management and accelerate the conversion of organic waste into CBG and other forms of clean energy.
For OIL, the agreements mark a significant step in expanding its low-carbon energy portfolio through OGEL and scaling up integrated waste-to-clean-energy solutions.
