Syensqo ends C6O4 production in Italy completing key milestone in fluorosurfactant phase-out

Syensqo said investments in research and innovation since 2019 have enabled it to develop and roll out new polymerisation processes that do not require fluorosurfactants across its product lines

Syensqo has ended production of C6O4, the last fluorosurfactant used in manufacturing certain fluoropolymers at its Spinetta Marengo site in Italy, marking a major milestone in the company's drive to phase out fluorosurfactants by 2026.

The move fulfils an innovation commitment announced in 2022 and follows years of investment in research and development to develop alternative manufacturing technologies that eliminate the need for fluorosurfactants without compromising the performance or reliability of its high-performance polymers.

These materials are critical to a range of applications, including semiconductors, batteries, hydrogen technologies, healthcare and other specialised industrial uses.

Fluorosurfactants, which are used as processing aids in the production of certain fluoropolymers, have drawn regulatory and public scrutiny amid broader concerns over per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Syensqo said investments in research and innovation since 2019 have enabled it to develop and roll out new polymerisation processes that do not require fluorosurfactants across its product lines, paving the way for the cessation of C6O4 production in Italy.

"This milestone reflects years of investment in innovation. We have developed manufacturing technologies that eliminate the need for fluorosurfactants while continuing to provide the high-performance fluoropolymers our customers rely on for critical applications including semiconductors, clean energy and healthcare," said Mike Radossich, CEO of Syensqo.

"Fluoropolymers remain essential materials for technologies that support the energy transition, medical innovation, clean water and digital infrastructure.”

The company said nearly 100% of its fluoropolymers are now manufactured without these PFAS processing aids. However, a small share—approximately 1% of the sites' production volume—involves highly specialised fluoropolymers that still require further research and qualification before they can transition to the new manufacturing technology.

These products primarily support hydrogen and semiconductor applications, where stringent performance requirements make the transition more complex.

Until the shift is complete, existing C6O4 inventories will be used to manufacture these specialised fluoropolymers, with Syensqo stating that it will apply the best available technology to reduce emissions.

The end of C6O4 production forms part of Syensqo's broader strategy to reduce emissions from manufacturing while continuing to develop high-performance polymers and respond to evolving regulatory expectations through science-based solutions.

With a broad portfolio of specialty polymers, the company combines materials science expertise and customer collaboration to develop products for demanding industrial applications.

Syensqo said the transition to fluorosurfactant-free manufacturing strengthens its ability to supply high-performance materials while progressively reducing the environmental footprint of its manufacturing operations.
