Envision Energy and Sasol explore green hydrogen breakthrough in South Africa energy transition push

The study will assess how clean energy systems can be optimised around power availability, market conditions and industrial operating requirements

Envision Energy and Sasol have joined forces to assess the potential development of a green hydrogen system at Sasol’s Sasolburg operations in South Africa, marking a significant step toward accelerating lower-carbon fuels and chemicals production.
 
The collaboration will focus on a design study examining how renewable power, energy storage and electrolyser technologies can be integrated to enable future green hydrogen production and support emerging applications such as eMethanol and sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF).
 
The partnership was spotlighted during a visit by South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, to Envision’s Chifeng Hydrogen Net Zero Industrial Park in Inner Mongolia, held as part of the South Africa-China Energy Investment Conference.
 
Drawing on Envision’s global expertise in renewable energy, battery energy storage systems, green hydrogen and AI-driven energy management, the study will assess how clean energy systems can be optimised around power availability, market conditions and industrial operating requirements.
 
Expected to conclude later this year, the study will provide technical and commercial insights to guide potential future investment decisions. Sasol will evaluate how its existing industrial expertise and infrastructure can be leveraged alongside emerging technologies to advance its energy transition strategy and create new market opportunities.
 
Green hydrogen is increasingly viewed as a critical solution for industries that are difficult to decarbonise, offering new pathways for sustainable industrial growth.

Sasol said the partnership will help evaluate the role of integrated renewable energy, storage and electrolyser technologies in supporting commercially viable green hydrogen production at Sasolburg.

The initiative highlights growing global efforts to combine renewable energy, advanced storage and hydrogen technologies to transform industrial energy systems and accelerate the shift toward a lower-carbon economy.
