Germany launches landmark North Sea hydrogen pipeline project

AquaDuctus will serve as the backbone of an interconnected North Sea hydrogen network

AquaDuctus, a groundbreaking GW-scale offshore hydrogen pipeline, is set to transform Europe’s energy landscape by linking offshore green hydrogen production to the mainland. Designed for open and non-discriminatory access, the pipeline will allow multiple users—especially offshore wind-linked producers—to transport hydrogen efficiently across borders.

Recognized as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), AquaDuctus will serve as the backbone of an interconnected North Sea hydrogen network, connecting Germany with the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Norway. By linking production and demand centers across Europe, the project is poised to accelerate the continent’s large-scale deployment of green hydrogen.

Sven Becker, Project Director at AquaDuctus, and Martijn van Driel, Project Director at Worley, emphasized the collaboration driving the project. Worley is providing EPC-Management services across all phases: Select (Project Development), Define (Planning), and Execute (Execution). Scope includes engineering, permitting, inspections, documentation review, and schedule and cost monitoring, as well as supervision of engineering, procurement, EPC, and commissioning contractors.

“These services help ensure quality, safety, and delivery certainty throughout the project life cycle,” the team noted.

Worley is joined by StreamTec Solutions AG, leading the extensive permitting scope and bringing specialized offshore construction and materials expertise. “StreamTec is a well-known player in the North Sea, and Worley is pleased to welcome them as part of the execution team,” the statement said.

As the first-of-its-kind large-diameter offshore hydrogen pipeline, AquaDuctus will also act as a hub for connecting hydrogen-producing wind parks and future interconnecting pipelines across the North Sea. The project marks a major milestone in Europe’s transition to a scalable, integrated hydrogen economy.
