Indian Chemical News (ICN) is organising a Session on Battery: The Big Opportunity during its Third Edition of the NextGen Chemicals & Petrochemicals Summit on July 13-14, 2023 at Hotel Novotel, Mumbai International Airport, Mumbai. The main theme of the Summit is "Innovation, Self-reliance & Sustainability”.

Shift towards green hydrogen session will be held on July 13, 2023 and the speakers are: Manish Panchal, Executive Director, Equirus Capital; Sturle Pedersen, Chairman, Greenstat Hydrogen India; D. M. R. Panda, General Manager – Hydrogen, NTPC; Amrit Singh Deo, Senior Managing Director, FTI Consulting; Vish Iyer, Global Chief Commercial Officer, Jakson Green; Jitendra Goyal, Associate Vice President, Toyota Kirloskar Motor; and Viswanathan Rajendran, Partner, Kearney.

Green hydrogen, the next generation fuel, is a zero-emissions source of fuel and can be used as a feedstock and fuel to industries such as Chemical, Refining, Steel, Petrochemicals, and others. Hydrogen supports a gradual transition towards lower-carbon sources of energy as it can be generated from natural gas and other non-renewable by-products.

The demand for hydrogen technologies is growing as it is accelerating the transition to more sustainable forms of energy while still supporting current energy models with all their regional variations. Green hydrogen, which uses renewable energy to produce hydrogen from water, is taking off around the globe. Many companies, investors, governments, and environmentalists believe it is an energy source that could help end the reign of fossil fuels and slow the world's warming trajectory.

India is also uniquely identified to adopt green Hydrogen, with several favorable factors. Green hydrogen provides significant opportunities for India to expand into a new clean energy technology sector, developing domestic manufacturing expertise to supply both the Indian market and abroad.

Hydrogen demand in India could grow more than fourfold by 2050, representing almost 10% of global hydrogen demand. Initial demand growth is expected from mature markets like refinery, ammonia, and methanol, which are already using hydrogen as industrial feedstock and in chemical processes.

India has a unique opportunity to become a global leader in the hydrogen energy ecosystem. With a renewable energy target of 500 GW for 2030 and net zero by 2070, India could become a Hydrogen hub as it is a promising opportunity.

Key discussion points during panel discussion are: Implementing national green hydrogen mission in a time bound manner; Opting for large scale green hydrogen projects in industry verticals and its financial viability; Near to long-term policy pathways to reduce manufacturing cost of green hydrogen; R&D and manufacturing of electrolysers, fuel cells, and energy storage; Harmonization of global standards and certification; Providing grants for R&D and upskilling; and storage, safety, and environmental concerns.

The two-day summit will see a galaxy of thought leaders brainstorming on innovation, self-reliance & sustainability in chemicals, petrochemicals, and energy sectors so that India can move ahead by taking quantum jumps in years to come.
