Early weed control key to cotton turnaround: Rajavelu NK, CEO, Crop Care Business, Godrej Agrovet

India is addressing its declining cotton yields in mission mode, aiming to nearly double the crop’s productivity over the next five years, with advanced crop care solutions set to play a crucial role in helping it achieve this goal. Cotton remains one of India’s most important cash crops, supporting the livelihoods of nearly 60 lakh farmers and contributing significantly to the rural economy. Despite having more than 120 lakh hectares under cultivation, the country continues to face relatively low productivity levels compared to global benchmarks.

The country’s target is to grow cotton yields roughly 72 per cent to 755 kilogrammes per hectare by 2031 up from 440 kg/ha currently. This will require a concerted push on several fronts including the development of more resilient seeds, the adoption of a technology-led approach to farming and even timely weed control. Strengthening productivity will also depend on improving the crop’s resilience during its most vulnerable early growth stages, when environmental stress and weed competition can significantly affect plant establishment and future yield potential.

That’s because weeds can take a severe toll on the cotton crop, reducing yields by anywhere between 40 to 85 per cent, as they siphon vital nutrients and resources away from the crop to feed their own growth. One of the key reasons for this productivity gap is early-stage crop stress, particularly due to weeds, which can severely affect crop establishment if not managed effectively.

Studies have shown that weeds can consume as much as half of the amount of fertilisers applied to a crop and 40 per cent of the soil moisture, severely hampering the growth of the cotton crop and its yield potential. In many cotton-growing regions, weeds begin competing with the crop almost immediately after sowing, weakening early plant development and reducing the crop’s ability to establish strong roots.

And they wreak the worst of their damage when they take root in the early stages. Cotton growth during the early stages tends to be slow which makes the crop especially vulnerable to weeds. It is also planted with wide spacing between saplings, further encouraging weed growth. In this phase, weeds kind of clash aggressively with the crop for water, nutrients, sunlight, and soil moisture which makes early stage crop management critically important, for keeping the plants growing healthy.

Global warming driven climate change is also worsening the weed menace. With intermittent but unseasonal rainfall, and high intensity rain spells creates conditions in which weeds thrive. Across key cotton belt states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, farmers are seeing erratic monsoons more and more along with prolonged dry periods, sudden heavy rain, and unseasonal showers. These shifting weather patterns are increasing early-stage crop stress and making cotton cultivation much more unpredictable.

Cotton, especially during its early growth stages, is highly sensitive to waterlogging and climatic stress. Excess moisture and intermittent rainfall create favourable conditions for aggressive weed growth, intensifying competition precisely when the crop is most vulnerable.

It’s not just about the hit to yields either, weeds erode farm prosperity. According to recent reports, nearly 80 percent of marginal farmers in India have experienced crop losses due to adverse climatic events over the last five years. Among the leading causes were drought, erratic or unseasonal rainfall, and delayed or early monsoon withdrawal, highlighting the growing need for climate-resilient and timely crop care practices.

Weeding is the second most-labour intensive operation in Indian cotton farming. Pulling weeds out can take as many as 33 man-days per hectare. This comes at a cost. Weeding, in fact, can cost over Rs. 6,000 per hectare, accounting for 18.45 per cent of the total cost of cultivation. For farmers already dealing with rising cultivation expenses and weather-related uncertainty, repeated manual weeding operations place additional pressure on farm economics and profitability.

At a time when increasingly adverse conditions on account of climate change are already weighing on the cotton crop, farmers simply cannot afford to lose yields to weeds. This makes early-stage protection critical to ensure that farmers do not lose their initial investment in seeds, fertilisers, labour, and irrigation.

The weather, after all, is uncontrollable. Weed management is not. Early-stage interventions are most effective at tackling weed growth and can give the cotton crop a 25-30 day weed-free window, at a time when it is at its most vulnerable. Managing weeds from the beginning helps prevent competition during the most vulnerable stage of crop growth, allowing cotton seedlings to establish stronger roots and more uniform growth.

There are several steps a farmer can take to control weed growth in the early stages.

Deep ploughing, for example, can root out weed seeds. On top of that, removing residues and debris from earlier crops can also help prevent weeds from getting carried over into the next crop cycle. With proper land preparation, weed seed banks tend to reduce and pest habitats get destroyed, so there is a cleaner, more stable beginning for the crop.

Soil testing can help farmers anticipate possible weed pressure while crop rotation practice can disrupt the lifecycle of weeds and other pests. Knowing soil health, plus the nutrient situation of soil, gives farmers better chances to plan crop nourishment and make timely decisions around crop care.

Mulching with organic stuff such as straw can also help to suppress weed growth. Beyond that, mulching tends to help steady soil temperature, hold onto moisture, and cut down on soil erosion from sudden heavy rainfall, so the crop gets a stronger start in those early growth stages.

Precision farming methods, like drip irrigation, where water goes more or less straight to the root zone of the cotton. This can reduce weeds, basically by depriving them of the moisture they’d really want. And technologies such as drip fertigation can further boost input-use efficiency, because water and nutrients are delivered right where the cotton needs them, while non-target areas get less of the action, so weeds end up limited.

The usage of drones to chart weed growth can build an information store, on how the plants develop, in a way that helps farmers act proactively, during the crop’s early stages by watching germination pattern, soil moisture levels, and early weed popping up, make it easier for farmers make timely informed choices. 

Farmers can supplement these methods with the use of broad-spectrum solutions. These can include combinations like Quizalofop-ethyl and Pyrithiobac Sodium, which are effective against both narrow (grassy) and broad-leaf weeds. Such solutions help maintain a cleaner field during the critical early growth phase and reduce the need for repeated corrective measures later in the season.

Early-stage weed protection is a mix of agronomy and regular monitoring, and timely intervention. Following the principles of the right product, right dose, right time, and the right application method, you keep weed control measures working well, without adding extra, unneeded stress on the crop itself.
