Petkim selects Univation Technology for planned 850,000-tonne polyethylene complex in Turkiye

The proposed facility is designed to produce 850,000 metric tonnes of polyethylene annually

Türkiye’s petrochemical sector is poised for a major capacity boost, with Petkim Petrokimya Holding A.Ş. selecting Univation Technologies’ UNIPOL PE Process Technology for a planned polyethylene production complex in Aliaga-Izmir.

The proposed facility is designed to produce 850,000 metric tonnes of polyethylene annually across two 425,000-tonne reactor lines. The project remains subject to Petkim’s final investment decision (FID).

If realised, the complex would mark the first installation of Univation’s UNIPOL™ PE Process at the Petkim site and rank among the largest polyethylene technology licensing awards in Türkiye.

The planned investment comes as Türkiye seeks to strengthen its domestic petrochemical production capacity and reduce reliance on imported polyolefins. The project is expected to support Petkim’s long-term growth while expanding local supply to meet the country’s evolving market needs.

Univation said the project’s scale, production flexibility and established technology could help advance Türkiye’s petrochemical growth ambitions.

"PETKIM's selection of the UNIPOL PE Process for this significant 850 kTA project reflects the proven performance and flexibility of our technology," said Sereen Massoud, President of Univation Technologies. "By enabling a broad portfolio of high-performance polyethylene products across two reactor lines, this project would support PETKIM's long-term growth while expanding domestic supply to meet Türkiye's evolving market needs."

Petkim, a subsidiary of Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company SOCAR, is Türkiye’s first and only integrated petrochemical producer. Its facilities in Aliağa, İzmir, manufacture petrochemical products used across industries including plastics, chemicals, packaging, automotive and construction.

The planned polyethylene complex would expand the company's production capabilities and could help strengthen domestic supply chains in a market where reducing import dependence remains a strategic priority.
