BASF has announced the US availability of Bemotrizinol, marketed under its Tinosorb S trademark, following the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the ingredient as a sunscreen active.
The approval opens the door for BASF to market and sell Bemotrizinol in the United States under a Supplemental License Agreement with DSM Nutritional Products LLC.
Under the agreement, BASF holds co-exclusive rights to market and sell Bemotrizinol during the FDA’s 18-month exclusivity period. The authorization covers sunscreen products manufactured in the United States as well as products imported into the country.
Known globally as a highly effective broad-spectrum UV filter, Tinosorb S provides protection across both UVA and UVB wavelengths. The ingredient is also valued for its exceptional photostability and its ability to enhance the photostability of other UV filters—properties that can help formulators develop sunscreens designed for long-lasting, broad-spectrum protection.
The US approval strengthens BASF’s position in the sun-care market, where the company offers a broad portfolio of UV filters spanning its Tinosorb, Uvinul and Z-COTE product families.
Beyond UV filters, BASF supplies formulation ingredients including emollients, emulsifiers, rheology modifiers, film formers and active ingredients. The company says its integrated portfolio is designed to help sunscreen manufacturers and formulators develop next-generation products combining high-performance UV protection, sensory appeal and sustainability-focused innovation.
With Tinosorb S now approved for the U.S. market, BASF said it is ready to work with sunscreen manufacturers, brand owners and formulators to bring new sun-protection products to American consumers.
The company is positioning the launch as a response to growing demand for effective, reliable and high-performing sunscreen formulations.
