Emvolon and Freepoint strike $450 million+ deal to scale waste-gas-derived liquid fuels

The deal includes a first purchase option worth more than $450 million over seven years

Emvolon, an MIT spinout developing technology to turn methane-rich waste gases into liquid fuels, has secured a major commercial and financing partnership with global commodity merchant Freepoint Commodities that could support the company’s expansion into a global fuel producer.
 
The companies announced that they had signed two definitive agreements, including a seven-year commodity purchase framework under which Freepoint will become the primary buyer of Emvolon’s biomethanol and other liquid fuels.
 
The deal includes a first purchase option worth more than $450 million over seven years. As Emvolon expands its project portfolio, production volumes are expected to scale toward 300,000 metric tons a year, with fuel distributed through Freepoint’s global physical commodity network.
 
The partnership also goes beyond offtake. Freepoint will have direct co-investment rights to provide equity and debt capital across Emvolon’s project portfolio and clean-energy infrastructure assets, potentially helping the company move projects from technology deployment into commercial-scale financing.

“This dual commercial and capital agreement with Freepoint systematically solves the core bottleneck in decentralized fuel manufacturing by securing our buyer and anchoring our project financing platform. We are building our first commercial system now and will put that foundation to work across North America and key international growth regions.”
 
Emvolon is pursuing a “Fuels-as-a-Service” model designed to allow waste-site operators to convert stranded methane into marketable liquid fuels without relying on major pipeline or grid infrastructure.
 
The company’s modular micro-reactors use repurposed automotive engines to convert waste gas into fuels such as methanol directly at the source.
 
The target feedstocks include methane from landfills, dairy farms, wastewater treatment facilities and industrial gas sites.
 
The model combines three elements: securing waste-gas feedstocks, deploying modular conversion systems and locking in both fuel offtake and project financing.
 
Emvolon has already demonstrated the site-development strategy through its joint venture with Montauk Renewables. The new Freepoint agreement adds the commercial and capital components needed to replicate that model across multiple projects and regions.
