Godavari Biorefineries has secured a European Patent Office grant for its invention, “A Biofiller for Rubber Reinforcement,” marking a significant step in the company’s push to develop renewable alternatives for industrial materials.
The patented technology centres on a biodegradable, eco-friendly biofiller engineered from lignocellulosic biomass. The material is designed to partially replace conventional carbon black in tyres and other rubber products while maintaining or improving key mechanical properties.
The innovation could have applications well beyond tyres, with potential use in footwear, belts, bags and a wide range of industrial rubber products. Its scalable manufacturing process could also deliver cost and environmental benefits, positioning biomass-derived materials as a potential alternative to fossil-based reinforcing materials.
"At Godavari, we have always looked at biomass not simply as a feedstock, but as a starting point for creating new products and new possibilities. The challenge with any bio-based alternative is not only to replace a conventional material, but to prove it can perform reliably in real-world application.
"This biofiller brings together renewable biomass, materials science and industry requirements. The European patent is a recognition of the innovation behind this approach and another step towards embedding sustainability into all our processes," said Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries.
The development addresses a key challenge in rubber manufacturing: reducing reliance on carbon black without sacrificing the strength, durability and performance expected from rubber compounds.
“Carbon black plays an important role in rubber reinforcement, delivering the strength, durability, and performance that demanding applications require. Developing a bio-based filler that can partially replace carbon black while maintaining comparable performance and added advantage of renewable sourcing, is a significant materials science challenge.
"At Godavari we’re working at this intersection of performance and sustainability, exploring renewable alternatives that can help reduce dependence on fossil-based reinforcing materials without compromising the performance of rubber compounds,” said Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director, Godavari Biorefineries and Co inventor of the patent along with Manisha Jadhav and Prof Vinod Malshe.
The European patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries’ growing intellectual property portfolio and underscores its broader strategy of using biomass and science-led innovation to develop sustainable industrial solutions.
With the latest patent, the company is seeking to turn renewable biomass into higher-value materials that can combine commercial performance with environmental gains.
