UPM unveils world’s first carbon-negative, fully recyclable black pigment

The innovation -- UPM Circular Renewable Black -- is the world’s first bio-based, near-infrared (NIR) detectable, carbon-negative black

Finland's UPM has launched a groundbreaking pigment set to transform sustainable packaging.

The innovation -- UPM Circular Renewable Black -- is the world’s first bio-based, near-infrared (NIR) detectable, carbon-negative black, delivering premium packaging aesthetics without compromising recyclability.

For years, black packaging has posed a recycling challenge. Conventional carbon black pigments block NIR detection, making materials invisible to sorting systems in recycling facilities.

UPM Circular Renewable Black changes the game. Derived from renewable lignin and certified by FSCTM, PEFC, and ISCC Plus, the pigment combines deep, iconic black with full NIR detectability and a carbon-negative footprint—allowing brands to achieve both high-end design and sustainability.

“With UPM Circular Renewable Black, we are redefining what’s possible in sustainable packaging. For years, black was seen as incompatible with circularity—but we’ve changed that narrative,” said Robert Marx, Vice President Commercial for UPM Biorefining.

“This innovation combines iconic deep black with full recycling detectability and a carbon-negative footprint, proving that sustainability and design excellence can go hand in hand. It’s a breakthrough that reflects UPM’s commitment to driving bold, science-based solutions for brand success and a truly sustainable circular economy.”

The pigment will be produced at UPM’s €1.3 billion biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, Europe’s largest industrial-scale investment in biochemicals. The facility converts sustainably sourced hardwood into next-generation biochemicals, supporting the shift from fossil-based to renewable materials across multiple industries.

UPM Circular Renewable Black is part of the company’s portfolio of CO2-negative solutions, pushing the boundaries of sustainable packaging while maintaining premium aesthetics.
