Xtovia signals India’s shift from beauty manufacturing to proprietary science

The development also signals a broader shift in India’s beauty and specialty chemicals ecosystem

India’s beauty industry is entering a new phase—one driven not just by manufacturing and formulation, but by original research, proprietary molecules and intellectual property. 
 
At the centre of that shift is Xtovia, which has become India’s first beauty and personal care company to secure INCI names for two synthesised molecules: Arginine Thioctate and Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine Thioctate.
 
The milestone gives Xtovia formal recognition for the novelty of its molecules and puts the company among a growing group of global beauty innovators developing proprietary active ingredients, including Olaplex and K18.
 
For decades, Indian beauty companies have largely built products around imported actives developed by international ingredient suppliers. Xtovia is taking a different route: developing the underlying science and molecules in-house and seeking to commercialise them as proprietary technologies.
 
INCI, or the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, is the globally recognised system for identifying cosmetic ingredients on product labels. Securing an INCI name formally establishes a molecule as a distinct cosmetic ingredient, enabling it to be labelled and marketed across international markets.
 
The development also signals a broader shift in India’s beauty and specialty chemicals ecosystem. Traditionally known for manufacturing, generics and raw-material supply, the sector is increasingly moving up the value chain towards original molecule development, in-house R&D and globally scalable intellectual property.
 
“India has historically been known more for product development than for creating original science and intellectual property. But that is changing. We are seeing a growing deep-tech ecosystem that is enabling companies to move beyond using existing technologies to developing proprietary science of their own.

Xtovia’s innovation strategy is built around TriLayerX HairTech, its patent-pending multi-layer hair repair technology powered by three Alpha Lipoic Acid-based actives.
 
The company positions this as the next stage in the evolution of hair repair science—from bond-building technologies pioneered by Olaplex, to biomimetic peptide technology pioneered by K18, and now towards multi-active systems designed to address multiple forms of hair damage simultaneously.
 
TriLayerX combines three proprietary technologies, each targeting a different layer of damaged hair. NanoEncapX is designed for deep cortex repair. CutiCloneX uses the INCI-registered Arginine Thioctate for precision cuticle repair. LipidMimicX incorporates the INCI-registered Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine Thioctate to recreate a protective barrier designed to mirror hair’s natural lipid layer.
 
Together, the technologies target the cortex, cuticle and lipid layer, creating a multi-mechanism repair system rather than relying on a single pathway.
 
The company has filed five patents, including three global patent applications, covering technologies developed in-house, with one patent already granted.
 
It has also developed what it describes as the world’s first visual hair repair test, alongside an Elastometer-based testing methodology designed to measure improvements in hair strength.
 
The ambition is clear: Xtovia is seeking to build more than another beauty brand. It is building the molecules, technologies, patents and measurement systems that underpin its products—and, in the process, positioning Indian beauty innovation as a potential source of original science and globally commercialisable intellectual property.
