Durr launches EcoRS Generation 2 robot platform for paint shop applications

Dürr has unveiled its EcoRS Generation 2 robot platform, a new standardized solution designed to support a wide range of paint shop applications while simplifying system planning, operation, maintenance, and service.
 
The new EcoRS range comprises four robot models covering load capacities from 20 to 150 kilograms and reach distances of up to 3,100 millimeters. The platform is designed for applications including sealing, cleaning, and handling, allowing manufacturers to deploy a common robot architecture across multiple processes.
 
According to Dürr, the standardized platform can reduce complexity throughout the equipment lifecycle by simplifying system planning, spare-parts management, maintenance, and service. 
 
“With the new EcoRS generation, we are establishing a standardized platform for sealing applications. Customers benefit from high process quality, maximum availability, and significantly reduced complexity throughout the entire lifecycle,” says Martin Wurst, Product Manager at Dürr.
 
The EcoRS robots have been developed specifically for paint shop operations, combining robotics, control systems, and application technology in a solution tailored to the requirements of these processes.
 
Dürr says the platform delivers high path accuracy, consistent material application, and reliable seam quality, particularly in fine-seam sealing applications. These capabilities are intended to support stable and reproducible sealing processes as vehicle manufacturers face increasingly demanding requirements for both visible and functional seams.
 
The robots also feature an enlarged work envelope, providing greater flexibility when handling different vehicle models and supporting future production programs.
 
A key development in the EcoRS Generation 2 is the integration of internal motors for axes 3 through 6, along with internal cabling. The design reduces the robot's interference contour while making the system easier to clean.
 
The updated architecture also reduces the robots' overall space requirements and weight, potentially providing greater flexibility in paint shop layouts and equipment integration.
 
Dürr has designed the EcoRS robots and their associated application technology as an integrated system. By combining robot kinematics, control technology, and process technology, the platform is intended to provide high repeatability and reliable operation across sealing applications.
 
Another key feature of the EcoRS platform is its common control and software architecture. The robots use the same control technology as Dürr's painting robots and are fully integrated into the company's control architecture and DXQ platform.
 
This integration creates a unified system environment across the paint line. Operators can analyze process and operational data across different areas of the facility, helping identify potential optimization opportunities at an early stage.
 
The standardized control architecture also simplifies integration into existing production environments, allowing the robots to fit more readily into established manufacturing systems.
 
Dürr is also positioning the EcoRS Generation 2 as a way to improve equipment availability while reducing operating costs.
 
A standardized robot portfolio can simplify maintenance, troubleshooting, and service by reducing the number of spare-part variants required. Lower inventory requirements can, in turn, reduce operating costs and contribute to a lower total cost of ownership.
 
Combined with the robots' robust design and common platform architecture, the approach is intended to support higher system availability and more cost-effective operation over the lifetime of paint shop equipment.
 
With four models spanning different load capacities and reach requirements, Dürr's EcoRS Generation 2 brings sealing, cleaning, and handling applications onto a common robotic platform, targeting greater standardization without compromising the process requirements of modern automotive paint shops.
