Sphera partners with BASF on product carbon footprint calculations

The partnership makes BASF’s methodology and digital solution for automated calculation of product carbon footprints (PCF) available in Sphera’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software solutions

Sphera, a leading global provider of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, has announced a partnership with BASF to provide an integrated, automated solution for chemical and manufacturing companies to accurately and efficiently calculate product carbon footprints (PCF) rapidly for a company’s complete portfolio of products.

The partnership makes BASF’s methodology and digital solution for automated calculation of product carbon footprints (PCF) available in Sphera’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software solutions. LCAs help companies better analyze the impacts the supply chain is having on the company’s entire carbon footprint and make informed decisions on their path to net zero. Sphera’s LCA software solutions can be combined with other Sphera solutions, including Corporate Sustainability, Environmental Accounting and Product Sustainability software and content, to enable an integrated carbon and ESG management and reporting platform across complete product portfolios.

The LCA automation solution combines Sphera’s expertise as the leading solution provider for Product Sustainability software, data and consulting services with BASF’s expertise in PCF automated calculation and methodology that is in line with relevant international standards. Sphera’s LCA software is the most widely used in the chemical industry. It is backed by decades of data built from mandates with industry giants and is continually maintained, providing a complete solution with intuitive data collection and reporting tools. BASF’s PCF methodology provides a standardized calculation for the chemical industry to ensure a uniform LCA result.

As investors demand more transparency and consumers make more environmentally conscious purchase decisions, the ability to measure a product’s carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle has become increasingly important. In the chemical industry where carbon footprint calculations are especially complex, having reliable, accurate calculations of a product’s carbon footprint across the entire supply chain is crucial to ensuring success for companies when measuring and reporting GHG emissions.

“For more than 30 years, Sphera has helped companies conduct life cycle assessments to model their product’s life cycle,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “We’re honored to partner with BASF to enable customers to calculate PCFs in a transparent, scalable and cost-effective way based on proven, science-based environmental data and reliable methodologies. Helping customers to understand, optimize and communicate their corporate and product sustainability is critical to our mission of creating a safer, more sustainable and productive world.”

Alessandro Pistillo, Director Digital Strategic Projects at BASF, added “PCFs provide valuable information on levers for reducing greenhouse gas emissions along the value chains, providing important information for chemical companies as they work to reduce GHG emissions. Partnering with Sphera to provide an integrated approach for PCF calculation, will help ensure companies are successful as they work toward their transformation to climate neutrality and will drive the much-needed standardization.”
