OIL and MCD join hands to turn Delhi’s waste into clean energy with new bio-gas plants

Oil India Limited (OIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to establish Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants using segregated organic municipal solid waste generated in Delhi.
The MoU was signed on July 30, 2026, in the presence of Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of Delhi, and Pravesh Wahi, Mayor, Delhi, along with senior officials from the Government of Delhi, MCD, and Oil India Limited.
The partnership marks a major step towards transforming Delhi’s municipal waste management system by converting biodegradable waste into renewable green fuel. The initiative will help reduce landfill dependency, improve urban sanitation, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and support India’s clean energy transition and circular economy goals.
Under the agreement, OIL and MCD will work together to develop CBG plants based on segregated organic municipal solid waste. As the first phase of the initiative, two plants with capacities of 500 tonnes per day (TPD) and 300 TPD are planned in Delhi. Together, these facilities are expected to produce around 30–32 TPD of Compressed Bio-Gas.
The project strengthens OIL’s expanding waste-to-energy portfolio and aligns with key national missions, including the Swachh Bharat Mission, SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation), and the Net Zero vision through the creation of sustainable and environmentally responsible energy infrastructure.
The collaboration between OIL and MCD highlights a shared commitment to building cleaner cities, promoting renewable energy solutions, and creating a sustainable future through innovative waste management practices.
