When fully operational, the factory will be capable of producing electrolyzers that support up to 10 GW of installed capacity at customer sites over ten years
Topsoe, a leading global provider of advanced technology and solutions for the energy transition, has inaugurated its first—and Europe’s largest—Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark. This facility marks a major step in scaling up green hydrogen production for industrial decarbonization.
The state-of-the-art factory will manufacture high-efficiency SOEC stacks designed for industrial-scale green hydrogen production. With an initial annual capacity of 500 MW and the potential to expand further, the facility represents Topsoe’s single largest investment to date. The project has been supported by EUR 94 million from the EU Innovation Fund.
When fully operational, the factory will be capable of producing electrolyzers that support up to 10 GW of installed capacity at customer sites over ten years. This could enable an annual reduction of up to 15 million metric tons of CO₂—equivalent to the emissions from nearly 3.5 million gasoline-powered passenger vehicles—compared to conventional hydrogen production from natural gas.
By scaling advanced, high-efficiency SOEC technology, Topsoe aims to accelerate Europe’s clean energy transition and enhance its competitiveness in cleantech manufacturing. The technology will help decarbonize energy-intensive sectors such as steel, cement, chemicals, and long-distance transportation, which collectively contribute to around 30 per cent of global CO₂ emissions, according to the World Economic Forum.
Speaking at the inauguration, Morten Bødskov, Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, said: “This is a big day for Topsoe, for Herning, and for Denmark. Topsoe turns knowledge into action and complex chemistry into real change – their technologies make industries cleaner. Investments like this show what’s possible. They create jobs, growth, and a greener future. This new factory is exactly the kind of Danish and European investment in green technology we need.”
Roeland Baan, Chief Executive Officer at Topsoe, added: “Our SOEC facility will be a game-changer for the energy transition. The technology’s unmatched efficiency is crucial for scaling green hydrogen production to decarbonize heavy industries. With this facility, we are moving SOEC technology and Power-to-X from ambition to reality—at the scale and speed the world urgently needs. This achievement demonstrates Topsoe’s innovation, determination, and ability to turn science-based solutions into real industrial impact.”
Topsoe has already signed offtake agreements with First Ammonia for a green ammonia project in Texas, USA, and with Forestal for an e-methanol project in Spain. Both partnerships include a 10-year service warranty program, underscoring Topsoe’s long-term commitment to supporting its customers’ sustainability goals.
