Birla Carbon earns EcoVadis Platinum rating as it scales circular material solutions in sustainability push

Birla Carbon has reported fresh progress in sustainability, earning an EcoVadis Platinum rating that places it among the top 1% of more than 150,000 companies assessed globally, as the carbon materials manufacturer expands circular material solutions and strengthens supply chain oversight.

The company’s 14th annual Sustainability Report, titled ‘Sustainable – Work in Progress’, tracks progress under its ‘Share the Future’ sustainability strategy and its ambition to ‘be the clear leader in the industry’.

Despite heightened supply chain disruption and global uncertainty, Birla Carbon said it continued to advance its sustainability priorities, with a focus on innovation, operational efficiency, carbon footprint reduction and collaboration across the value chain.

Sharing his thoughts on the report, John Loudermilk, President and Chief Executive Officer, Birla Carbon, said, "The transition to a more sustainable future will require our industry to continually rethink how we operate, innovate, and collaborate across the value chain.

"At Birla Carbon, we have remained steadfast in our sustainability aspirations and in supporting our customers as they advance their own sustainability goals. Even amid a year of heightened supply chain disruption and global uncertainty, we continued to move forward with our vision to ‘be the clear leader in the industry’, particularly in sustainability.”

He added: “Sustainability is central to how we grow and create long-term value. This is a journey of continuous progress, and while we are encouraged by how far we have come, we remain equally focused on the work still ahead.”

A key milestone highlighted in the report is the industrial-scale deployment of Continua SCM at Birla Carbon’s facilities in Europe and Asia. The expansion is designed to widen access to circular material solutions across regions, backed by consistent product quality, quantified carbon footprint reductions and a global supply network.

The company also reported strong external sustainability assessments. In addition to its EcoVadis Platinum rating, Birla Carbon received a B in both Climate and Water from CDP, achieving what it described as the highest possible score for a privately disclosing company.

Birla Carbon said its supplier due diligence programme now covers all 18,171 active vendors. The programme uses the NAVEX RiskRate platform for continuous screening, with the company reporting no labour incidents identified to date.

The results underline the company’s focus on extending sustainability oversight beyond its own operations and across its supply chain.

Birla Carbon said it would continue to prioritise innovation, operational efficiency, emissions reduction and deeper stakeholder collaboration as it advances its sustainability strategy.

The report’s title, ‘Sustainable – Work in Progress’, reflects the company’s emphasis on continued improvement while acknowledging that further work remains in meeting its long-term sustainability ambitions.
