The Indian chemicals and petrochemicals industry has been undergoing metamorphosis. The transformation, supported by policy reforms, are accelerating the growth. However, the moot question arising out of this is how to achieve this growth in a sustainable and responsible manner.

Globally, chemical and petrochemical giants are taking strategic decisions by trimming/hiving off their portfolios to achieve the sustainability goals. Indian chemical companies do not have the liberty to take this route. Hence, these companies need to devise suitable strategies such as chemical waste management, recycling, and the circular economy to meet their sustainability target.

Several multinational chemical companies have launched transformational initiatives centered upon sustainability. Companies should adopt techniques like process optimization and cleaner production to minimize waste generation in the first place. They are establishing recycling facilities or partnering with specialized waste management companies that can help chemical companies convert waste into valuable resources.

Instead of considering waste as a burden, companies can explore opportunities for resource recovery. Also, implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives can hold chemical companies responsible for managing the waste generated from their products throughout their lifecycle.

Investing in research and innovation can help Indian chemical companies develop environmentally-friendly products, processes, and technologies. This includes developing bio-based alternatives, eco-friendly chemicals, and innovative recycling techniques that promote the circular economy.

By adopting these strategies, Indian chemical companies can reduce the environmental impact of their operations, conserve resources, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to the transformation of the industry towards a circular economy.
