Chikkali, Senior Principal Scientist and Professor (AcSIR), Polymer Science and Engineering Division, CSIR - National Chemical Laboratory, Pune; Lav Kumar, Additional Director, Centre for High Technology, MoPNG; Vineet Bakshi, Director - Business Development, LanzaTech; and Murari Mohan Jha, Editor, Indian Chemical News.

Integrating recycling technology, bio-based feedstocks, and carbon footprint reduction strategies presents significant opportunities for the petrochemical industry to transition towards a more sustainable future. These innovations can enhance resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and align with global sustainability goals.

We all are aware that traditional plastic recycling processes involve collecting and processing plastic waste into new products. Hence, improved sorting technologies and advanced mechanical processes can increase the efficiency of recycling streams, resulting in better-quality recycled materials.

Another significant step is the use of bio-based feedstocks that contribute to a lower carbon footprint. The development of processes and products that utilize bio-based feedstocks promotes green chemistry principles, which aim to minimize environmental impact and enhance safety.

Also, enhancing energy efficiency in petrochemical processes through improved equipment, heat recovery systems, and process optimization reduces overall energy consumption and associated emissions. Moreover, implementing CCS technology can capture carbon dioxide emissions generated from petrochemical processes and store them underground or utilize them in other processes, preventing them from entering the atmosphere.

As the industry evolves, collaboration between stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and industry players, will be crucial for driving these changes forward.

The integration of recycling technology, biobased feedstocks, and carbon footprint reduction strategies are critical emerging trends in the petrochemical industry as it strives for greater sustainability.

Key topics to be discussed during the session are: Recycling technologies; Chemical recycling and closed loop system; Bio-based feedstocks and green chemistry; Energy efficiency; Carbon capture and storage; Electrification of processes; and life cycle assessment.
