MAIRE lands $50M refinery overhaul mandate in Trinidad & Tobago

The project’s first phases will focus on identifying critical upgrade and refurbishment needs across the complex

MAIRE has secured a major $50 million contract to kickstart the rehabilitation of the Guaracara Refinery Complex in Point a Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago, marking a significant step in the energy group’s expansion across Central America.

The award, granted to Tecnimont—MAIRE’s Integrated E&C Solutions unit—through its subsidiary Tecnimont Services, will see the company undertake a sweeping technical and integrity assessment of the refinery, which currently boasts a capacity of approximately 150,000 barrels per day.

The project’s first phases will focus on identifying critical upgrade and refurbishment needs across the complex, while scrutinizing whether existing technologies can meet long-term operational and performance targets. The scope also includes evaluating energy efficiency, environmental impact, and designing advanced water intake and cooling systems aligned with the strictest international standards.

Armed with these findings, Tecnimont Services will produce preliminary CAPEX and OPEX estimates aimed at supporting the refinery’s eventual restart.

Phases 1 and 2 are slated for completion by early 2027. The project is then expected to move into FEED and full EPC stages, ultimately extending into Operations & Maintenance for a complete overhaul of the facility.

The contract underscores Tecnimont’s track record in handling complex upgrade projects, combining operational expertise with capabilities in green power, digital, and energy services.

Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, commented: “This project further strengthens our geographic diversification expanding our presence in Central America, and confirms the strategic relevance of upgrading initiatives.

"By leveraging our engineering expertise and technological know-how, we support the transformation of existing assets into more efficient and environmentally advanced facilities. The upgrading of the Guaracara Refinery Complex is expected to generate tangible benefits for the local economy, contributing to value creation, industrial development and skill enhancement.”
