HORIBA India marks 20 years, shifts focus from manufacturing to global innovation

The company says its next phase of growth will centre on expanding R&D capabilities and positioning India as a strategic innovation hub for the HORIBA Group

HORIBA India, the wholly owned subsidiary of Japan-based HORIBA Ltd., has completed 20 years of operations in the country, marking a significant shift from a sales and service organisation to a manufacturing, advanced R&D and innovation base serving India and the wider SAARC region.

Established in 2006, HORIBA India now operates across the Energy & Environment, Bio & Healthcare, and Materials & Semiconductor sectors, with capabilities covering manufacturing, testing, calibration, technology development and customer support.

Over the past two decades, the company has expanded its footprint to eight locations, with manufacturing facilities in Pune, Nagpur and Haridwar and a workforce of more than 600 employees. The India business has recorded average annual growth of over 15% and is targeting revenue of JPY 20 billion by 2028, underscoring the company's growing ambitions for the Indian market and its role within HORIBA's global operations.

The company says its next phase of growth will centre on expanding R&D capabilities and positioning India as a strategic innovation hub for the HORIBA Group.

From ‘Make in India’ to ‘Develop in India’

A major part of HORIBA India's evolution has been the development of local manufacturing and engineering capabilities. The company began hematology reagent production in Haridwar in 2013 before expanding its manufacturing footprint through facilities in Pune and Nagpur.

Its capabilities now extend across healthcare, automotive testing, environmental solutions and semiconductor technologies. In 2024, HORIBA India also began manufacturing Mass Flow Controllers (MFCs) in Pune, strengthening its presence in semiconductor-related technologies.

The company is now looking to move beyond the traditional ‘Make in India’ model, with a sharper focus on ‘Develop in India’ and ‘Innovate in India’.

HORIBA India is building this capability through Technical Centers developed in collaboration with IIT Delhi and IISc Bengaluru, as well as the HORIBA India Technical Institute (HITI) and Experience Zone in Nagpur. These initiatives are designed to bring together industry, academia and technical expertise for technology development, application engineering and capability building.

The company says these platforms will also enable Indian teams to contribute more directly to HORIBA's global innovation ecosystem.

Pristine Deeptech acquisition strengthens advanced materials push

HORIBA's India strategy received another boost in January 2026 with the completion of its acquisition of Pristine Deeptech, a lab-grown diamond R&D company. The transaction marked the HORIBA Group's first acquisition in India.

The acquisition expands HORIBA's capabilities in advanced materials and emerging applications, including semiconductors and quantum technologies. Integrated into HORIBA India, Pristine Deeptech is expected to contribute to the development of new technologies, products and businesses from India for global markets.

The move also reinforces the company's ambition to make India an increasingly important node in HORIBA's global innovation network.

Commenting on the milestone, Dan Horiba, Executive Director, HORIBA Ltd., Japan, said, "India has grown from a market for our technology into a base where it is manufactured, adapted, and increasingly developed. Twenty years in, our commitment to this market remains as strong as ever, and we see India playing an even larger role in HORIBA's global growth in the years ahead."

Hideyuki Koishi, Executive Corporate Officer, HORIBA Ltd., Japan, Chairman, HORIBA India, said, "Our journey in India reflects a steady progression, from sales and service, to manufacturing, to technology development. As we mark 20 years, our focus is on expanding R&D and innovation capabilities locally, so that India contributes not just to its own market but to HORIBA's global technology roadmap."

Rajeev Gautam, President, HORIBA India, said, "Twenty years is a significant milestone, but we see it as a foundation rather than a destination. With manufacturing capacity in place across Pune, Nagpur and Haridwar, and growing collaborations with institutions like IIT Delhi, University of Delhi and IISc Bengaluru, HORIBA India is well positioned to lead in areas from clean mobility and water to semiconductor process control."

India positioned as a larger global technology hub

As it enters its third decade in India, HORIBA is seeking to deepen its local R&D capabilities while expanding manufacturing and strengthening partnerships across industry and academia.

The company's strategy increasingly centres on developing technologies and solutions in India not only for domestic requirements but also for global markets. With its manufacturing base, institutional collaborations, expanding technology capabilities and first India acquisition in place, HORIBA India is positioning the country as an increasingly important part of the Group's global innovation strategy.

The company says its ambition is to move beyond participating in India's growth story and play a more active role in shaping it through the development of new technologies, solutions and markets.
