AkzoNobel coatings power maiden voyage of Baltic Ferry Jantar Unity

The deal also covers coatings for a second ferry slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2026

One of the Baltic Sea’s most modern vessels has officially entered service, marking the debut of the first of three new ferries to feature global paints giant AkzoNobel products.

The Jantar Unity, a roll-on/roll-off vehicle and passenger ferry, will operate between Świnoujście, Poland, and Trelleborg, Sweden, protected by 280,000 liters of marine coatings from AkzoNobel’s International brand.

Under a partnership with Remontowa Shipyard in Gdansk and operator Unity Line, the deal also covers coatings for a second ferry slated for delivery in the third quarter of 2026, with steel-cutting for a third vessel expected later this year.

“Our cooperation with AkzoNobel has a direct impact on the quality of the vessels we build,” explains Katarzyna Antoń, Head of Marketing at Unity Line. “The supplied products meet the highest standards, which is of key importance to us. It’s also significant that these proven solutions will continue to be used in the construction of the remaining ferries under the RoPax project.”

The Jantar Unity’s coating system includes Interzone 954GF on the car decks, an impact- and abrasion-resistant anti-corrosive epoxy coating engineered for long-term protection of surfaces subjected to heavy mechanical loads.

“We’re extremely grateful to our partners in this project for their trust and for choosing our high-performance solutions,” says Mirosław Pawlik, AkzoNobel’s Sales Manager for Marine Coatings Central Europe. “We now look forward to the delivery of the remaining two ferries, which we’ll soon have the pleasure of seeing on the Baltic Sea.”

At 195.6 meters long and capable of carrying up to 400 passengers, Jantar Unity is powered by four dual-fuel engines running on LNG and marine diesel. Its hybrid propulsion system reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while full compliance with IMO Tier III standards ensures it meets the strictest marine emissions regulations currently in force.
