The US Environmental Protection Agency has granted federal registration for chemical giant BASF’s Engenia herbicide. This paves the way for over-the-top (OTT) applications on dicamba-tolerant soybeans and cotton — and putting a powerful weed-fighting tool back in the hands of American growers.
The approval comes as farmers battle a surge of herbicide-resistant weeds threatening yields nationwide. With the new registration, soybean and cotton producers regain access to Engenia, designed to control more than 200 weed species.
“We are excited growers will once again have access to Engenia herbicide,” said Scott Kay, Vice President, BASF Agricultural Solutions U.S. “This registration will give soybean and cotton farmers doing the biggest job on Earth an additional tool to control more than 200 weed species and maximize their yields. We appreciate the EPA’s science- and risk-based process, using the latest data available, to grant this new registration.”
Powered by BASF’s exclusive BAPMA Salt Formulation, Engenia is billed as the most powerful trait-enabled knockdown solution available for dicamba-tolerant crops. The herbicide targets hard-to-control and resistant broadleaf weeds, including Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, kochia, morning glory and ragweed — persistent threats in fields across the country.
With the approval comes a renewed focus on stewardship and compliance. BASF said it is working alongside the EPA and state agencies to roll out national and state-specific training materials tied to the updated label requirements. The company plans to offer multiple training options to ensure proper application.
“Helping farmers and applicators understanding these new label requirements and proper application techniques is something we take very seriously,” said Nick Fassler, Director, Technical Service, BASF Agricultural Solutions US.
“Engenia herbicide is a critical tool for cotton and soybean farmers and one of the main ways to ensure this technology remains a tool in the tool box is to ensure farmers and applicators understand how to apply the product according to the label.”
With federal registration now in place, Engenia returns to the market at a pivotal time for growers facing mounting weed resistance — and looking for every available advantage in the field.
