Essen-based chemicals group Evonik has tightened its grip on long-term raw material security with a new methanol supply system designed to stabilise production and cut emissions across its European methionine network.
The company has partnered with Lülsdorf Functional Solutions GmbH, Röhm GmbH, and infrastructure specialist SYNEQT Pipelines to build a dedicated long-distance pipeline between Lülsdorf and Wesseling.
The system, which entered operation in June 2026, connects shared regional storage and logistics infrastructure directly to Evonik’s production site.
Methanol imported via Lülsdorf now flows straight to Wesseling through the new pipeline, creating a more efficient and integrated supply chain for both Evonik and Röhm.
"This joint solution helps us in three ways: It secures the long-term methanol supply for our Wesseling site, it reduces Scope 3 emissions, and it opens the opportunity to buy green methanol in the future,” says Norbert Steier, head of Production and Technology for Evonik's Animal Nutrition business line.
Evonik has invested a high single-digit-million-euro sum in the project, which the company says will strengthen reliability while improving environmental performance. The future shift to natural gas-based methanol is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by around 70% compared with the crude-oil-based material previously used.
