UPM Adhesive Materials cuts emissions 58% to advance climate goals ahead of schedule

UPM Adhesive Materials also intensified efforts to reduce Scope 3 emissions by expanding cooperation with raw material suppliers

UPM Adhesive Materials has reported major progress toward its 2030 sustainability targets, achieving a 58% reduction in emission intensity while strengthening collaboration across its supply chain to tackle value-chain emissions.

The company’s newly released Climate Review 2025 highlights significant gains in operational decarbonization, increased supplier engagement, and expanded customer support through enhanced environmental data and sustainable product solutions.

The 58% reduction in operational emissions, measured against a 2015 baseline, reflects targeted investments in energy efficiency and reduced fossil fuel consumption across production sites.

The achievement brings the business within reach of its goal to cut Scope 1 and 2 emission intensity by 65% per million square meters of material produced by 2030.

UPM Adhesive Materials also intensified efforts to reduce Scope 3 emissions by expanding cooperation with raw material suppliers. During 2025, most key suppliers responded to product carbon footprint questionnaires, significantly increasing the availability of primary emissions data and providing deeper visibility into environmental impacts across materials and regions.

The company has already reached one of its major 2030 sustainability milestones ahead of schedule. By the end of 2023, all purchased paper raw materials were certified under recognized third-party forest certification schemes, reinforcing the responsible sourcing credentials of its paper-based label products.

Customer support remains a key pillar of the company’s climate strategy. In 2025, UPM Adhesive Materials expanded its UPM Label Life service, offering externally validated life-cycle assessment data and Scope 3 emissions reporting. Product carbon footprint data is now available for approximately 94% of label products by global sales volume and is integrated directly into customer quotations.

The company also continued to develop recycling-compatible label solutions to help customers navigate evolving regulatory requirements and sustainability expectations. Meanwhile, its UPM RafCycle program continued to support customers and brand owners in recycling label release liner waste more efficiently.

“Customers need impactful ways to reduce carbon footprint and respond to evolving recyclability and regulatory requirements. The significant progress we’ve made in emission reductions, product footprint data availability and product portfolio development helps them make material choices that meet these needs,” says Robert Taylor, Director, Sustainability, UPM Adhesive Materials.

Looking ahead, UPM Adhesive Materials plans to further accelerate value-chain emission reductions in 2026, while advancing circular product innovation and improving customer access to environmental performance data.
