NTPC and EDF seal pact to explore nuclear power projects in India

The two companies will jointly assess feasibility, examine economic and tariff considerations, and explore EDF’s EPR technology for its applicability in India

NTPC has taken a major step towards India’s nuclear energy future, signing a non-binding MoU with French energy giant Électricité de France (EDF) to explore collaboration on new nuclear power projects.

The move comes after approvals from the relevant ministries and government departments.

The MoU was signed by Arnada Prasad Samal, CGM (Nuclear Cell), on behalf of NTPC, and Vakisasi Ramany, Senior Vice President, International Nuclear Development, representing EDF.

Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly assess feasibility, examine economic and tariff considerations, and explore EDF’s EPR technology for its applicability in India. The collaboration will also focus on maximizing localization for large-scale deployment, evaluating potential project sites, building human resource capabilities through training programs, and providing technical support as mutually agreed.

“This initiative aligns with NTPC’s strategy to expand into clean, reliable energy and contribute to India’s long-term energy security,” the company said.

India’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC currently operates more than 89 GW of installed capacity, with an additional 32 GW under construction. The company has set its sights on reaching 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources—a mix of thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power.

Beyond traditional power generation, NTPC is also investing in e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro, waste-to-energy, nuclear, and green hydrogen solutions.
