Various stakeholders have deliberated on the proposal of reconstitution of Plastic Development Council (PDC) and have stressed the need for implementation of quality standards by the industry.

A meeting was held recently on the reconstitution of the PDC for two years with reference from July 4 2011,

The stakeholders discussed the profile of the plastic processing industry and performance and growth of the sub-sectors in the plastic processing industry during the 11th Five Year Plan (2006-07 to 2011-12).

Besides, growth prospects of the different sub-sectors during the 12th Plan and beyond up to 2025, technology status of the industry and issues needed to be taken up in the 12th Five Year Plan, initiatives of the industry on human resources and skill development and implementation of quality standards by the industry were discussed.

Export performance, constraints faced by exporters and export promotional measures needed during the 12th Plan were also discussed.

The DCPC was of the opinion that continuation of PDC is vital as it provides an effective platform for specific issues and promotion and development of plastic industry in India.

The DCPC has been trying to revalidate the PDC for a further period of two years. The Council was established for a period of two years till October 23, 2009 to deliberate and suggest measures for sustained development of plastic processing industry, inter alia, including recycling of plastics, export of plastic and polymers, addressing environmental concerns etc.

The DCPC had taken up the matter of revalidating PDC with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). As suggested, the DCPC has approached the DIPP for consideration of its proposal for reconstitution and revalidation of the PDC along with its proposed composition along with adequate approval.

The PDC has representatives from the government, academia and industry.

“Its continuation is vital as the Council serves as an effective platform for addressing sector specific issues and for promotion and development of plastic industry in India,” the DCPC said.
